It just might work.Samsung has proven itself to be the modern master of the SSD, so it’s no surprise that its latest portable drive is impressive. So far it's working well (knock on wood) so I wanted to share for anyone else who has experienced the frustration of trying to make an external drive work correctly on their PS5 if you have a SATA interface drive, try a USB 3.0 adapter. That said, USB 3.0 is still fast (5GB/sec) and shouldn't bottleneck a SATA SSD (if nothing else, it would still be faster than a PS4 HDD). Obviously this SHOULDN'T be happening the PS5's USB ports explicitly support the faster USB standard, and the faster setup had zero issues on PS4. For whatever reason, the PS5 was like "I can work with this!" Now everything seems to be working exactly like it's supposed to, I can install and play games from the extended storage, etc. Just to see what would happen, I removed my SSD from the enclosure I'd been using on the PS4 Pro, plugged it in to the SATA to USB adapter, and attached it to the PS5. I dug through my drawer of PC parts and found a USB 3.0 to SATA adapter that I've had for quite a long time, mainly to use for drive cloning when I put SSDs in older Macs. Yet despite all these issues I could plug it back into the PS4 Pro and it would work perfectly fine. I hooked it up to my PS5, and regardless of the port, it gave me issues telling me the drive was removed incorrectly (even if it wasn't), telling me the data was corrupt, failing to format, etc. I have a StarTech USB 3.1 enclosure that I had been using with a SATA SSD on my PS4 Pro with no issues whatsoever. ![]() Like many others here I've been experiencing issues using external USB storage on my PS5.
